About Me
Hi! My name is Rafid, I’ve just finished my 3rd year of Microbiology and Immunology and am now currently on co-op with the BC Children’s Hospital Division of Rheumatology! Over the past year, I have mainly been working on a translational research study focusing on finding genetic biomarkers for medication intolerance in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
After first getting involved in research, I became a part of URO, where I’m very excited to help others get involved and talk about all kinds of research with people! When I’m not in the lab or clinic, I enjoy going on runs, and playing all kinds of sports with my friends, mostly soccer and basketball.
How did I first get into research?
I initially got into research when I emailed a PI with a lab in the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. She had been teaching Immunology as part of the MICB 202 section I was in and talked about her research in pediatric rheumatology which really interested me. I later sent my resume and unofficial transcript and then interviewed with her a few weeks later for a summer volunteer position. This position ended up leading to a studentship the next summer, and then a co-op position in the associated rheumatology clinic in BC Children’s Hospital!
